Grand Knight

From the Grand Knight Bernie Brown, Grand Knight

Since I have been elected Grand Knight I have read about Father McGivney and his founding of the Knights of Columbus. The more I read the more I am impressed by the symbols, words, and ceremonies he instituted in our order. This month I would like to talk about his choice to call us Knights.

Long ago Knights lived by a Code of Chivalry. A Knight was to fear God and maintain his church, to serve the liege lord in valor and faith and to obey those placed in authority. At all times he would speak the truth and keep the faith in the darkest hours. I can see these things in his goal for us to support our Priests and Bishops.

A Knight was to live by honor and for glory, to despise pecuniary reward. He would guard the honor of his fellow knights, and come to their aid in moments of distress. He would never refuse the challenge from an equal, and never turn his back on a foe. I can see this in his goal for us to help our fellow catholic brothers in their growth in the faith and in their search for work.

He was to protect the weak and defenseless, to give comfort to widows and orphans. He respects the honor of women. He would eschew unfairness, meanness and deceit. He would fight for the welfare of all. He would preserve to the end in any enterprise he began. I can see this in his goal for us catholic gentlemen to protect our families, and support of our communities.

Vivat Jesus
